Self Drilling Ground Anchor for National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich, London, is the leading maritime museum of the United Kingdom and may be the largest museum of its kind in the world.
The National Maritime Museum opened the Sammy Ofer Wing, a transformative £36.5m capital project which set a new strategic direction for the museum. With a total project value of £35 million, this space will be used to house displays, exhibitions and also to create archive space. The wing is scheduled to open in 2012 in time for the London Olympics.
Specialist subcontractor installed two levels of temporary works ground anchors on the project. They utilized approximately 100 self drilling ground anchors, including T30/11, T30/14 and T40/20. The self drilling ground anchors where installed to depths of between 11m–18m with a design load range from 290KN to 700KN.
The self drilling ground anchors were used to eliminate the need for internal propping, freeing up the site for an improved excavation program. This part of the project was successfully completed within the program schedule.
The new wing gives the museum an opportunity to focus on the stories of adventure, discovery, tragedy, courage and disaster that make it distinctive, leaving visitors with a richer understanding of Britain’s maritime heritage.
