Europe’s first underwater restaurant with the name of “Under” is coming
Based the proposal upon the film named The Abyss in 1989 that was directed by James Cameron, the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta designed the first under water restaurant in Europe with the name of “Under”. This restaurant will be built in a village that is at the southernmost point of the Norwegian coastline. Significantly, it will also function as a research center of marine life. “Under” will be half-sunken into the sea, the building under the sea will directly become part of the marine environment while the part above the surface of the water will lie against the craggy shoreline. The restaurant can accommodate 80 to 100 guests and will use muted lighting inside the restaurant and on the exterior seabed to help people see the sea life outside of the largest 11 X 4-meter panoramic acrylic window clearly. After entering the building, the guests will pass through three areas in turn: the wardrobe area, the champagne bar and the restaurant. The narrow, vertical acrylic window at the champagne bar show the transition between the shoreline and the ocean and the champagne bar is inspired by the subdued colors of the shell rocks and sands in the surrounding coastal areas. The building under the water rest directly on the seabed five meters below the surface. Meter-thick concrete walls will supply support and protection against the pressure and shock of the rugged sea conditions.
How to ensure the service life of the building, when it is constructed under the corrosive seawater? The stainless SDA bolts can be very helpful. The stainless materials has certain resistance to seawater and its service life can reach about 120 years. Besides, the combination of drilling, grouting and anchoring can result in outstanding support effect. After the fully grouting the anchor bolt can effectively ensure the stabilization of the building, together with the original geology.
