River Damming and Flood Control in Nam Tha 1# Hydropower Project

Nam Tha 1# Hydropower Project is located in Bokeo Province, the north of Laos, total installed capacity is 168 thousand KWH. There are three water-turbine generator sets with each 56 thousand KW and annual electricity-generation is 720 million KWH. It’s predicted to invest 400 million dollars and put into running in 2018, with 28 years’ operation period. After construction, it will have positive effect for the development of economy and society in the north region of Lao.

Laos is a mountainous country, Mekong River passes through the whole country, so water resource is rich and potential of hydroelectric-generation is great.

Since starting work, construction has encountered large pressure, workers and equipment have been input in large scale, expert group has been invited to guide several times. Though everyone’s efforts, Nam Tha 1# Hydropower Project finished closure in November, 2015 finally and 1 year in advance, which won precious time for dam filling.

Complicated geological conditions, inconvenient road for vehicle traffic and frequent rain all had been overcome, on May 28, filling of Nam Tha 1# dam had been reached 430 meters, which prepared for flood season.

To ensure flood control effect of reservoir in flood season, cut down flood peak and reduce downstream pressure, reservoir always empties storage capacity or fills dam to welcome the coming of flood. While self drilling anchor bar has great effect for reinforcing and supporting dyke and slope.
